Barbara Wynne Showers was born in Chevy Chase Maryland on August 17, 1955. She graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing (B.S.N., 1977) and was a Registered Nurse in the states of Maryland and Delaware. She graduated cum laude from the Delaware Law School (J.D., 1989) and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi and the Order of Barristers. While in law school, she was the winner of the First Year Moot Court Competition (1987). She was also a member and Vice President of the Moot Court Honor Society (member 1987-89, Vice President 1988-89) and a member of Phi Delta Phi, legal honors fraternity. Also during law school, she was a member of the interscholastic ABA/LSD Interviewing and Counseling Team (1989).

She was admitted to practice to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1989; United States District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1990; the New Jersey Bar in 1990, the United States District Court, District of New Jersey in 1990; the Tennessee Bar in 1991; the South Carolina Bar in 1992; the United States District Court, District of South Carolina in 1993; the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit in 1998; and the Supreme Court of the United States in 2000. She is a member of Charleston County, South Carolina, Tennessee and American Bar Associations, the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association and the Defense Research Institute. She was the author and speaker at the South Carolina Bar seminar on “How to Handle a Medical Malpractice Case” in 1998 and 2000 broadcast statewide. She is also a frequent lecturer to health professional groups. Her areas of practice include medical malpractice, professional liability, product liability, including pharmaceutical and medical devices, employment law and insurance law.
